Day 2 The real start

Today was the day that I started on my own. Matthew walked with me for the first half mile or so, so technically I didn’t start on my own but after he turned back I was definitely on my own. It wasn’t so bad, the sun was out, the scenery was stunning and I had a Cornish pasty in my bag

Today’s walk was mainly about archaeology – industrial mining archaeology. There were tin and copper mines everywhere. Not to mention abandoned mine shafts. Watching Poldark just doesn’t give you an idea of the scale of it all, although I’m sure a lot of the mines were after his time.

Mines everywhere

After the mines, the day was dominated by boulder-strewn paths which were both tiring and time -consuming to walk along.

There were other compensations though, beautiful views, amazing wild flowers, and, of course, the Cornish pasty

Large patch of bluebells
Common spotted orchid -I think. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

In the end, however, the tiring, boulder-strewn paths, became too much so I turned inland earlier than I had planned and headed for my B&B. Eleven miles, 4681 feet of ascent (according to my GPS) and nearly 35000 steps.

  1. So glad that you’re sharing this. It’s always such a contrast with what I’m doing each day. Just read an article on the BBC website about the numerous health benefits of walking too so you should be impressively healthy/invincible once you’ve finished. Assuming of course you aren’t already!

  2. Hi Rose what an amazing endeavour! I shall follow closely and hope to see you when you are in our neck of the woods, by which time you will be even more supersonic! Lots of love and good luck! Elaine x
