Day 5 Sunny Cornwall

Today started off wet enough for waterproofs but dried up pretty quickly. It was a stunning day. Blue skies, sandy beaches, SSSI’s (and I want to point out that it is perfectly legitimate to put an apostrophe after capitals, and doesn’t denote ownership, etc), and a Cornish pasty for lunch. Heaven.

Not only were the views back to St Ives spectacular, I also found I had joined the Camino.

The path was marked not just by National Trail acorns but also by scallop shells.

The Leland to Hayle ferry being no longer in existence I had to walk round the estuary (SSSI no. 1), to Hayle where I joined a surprisingly long queue to buy a Cornish pasty.

I sat by the side of the path to eat my pasty. This one was from Philps. It was good, and they make a large variety (they even have a vegan one) and they offer to post them to you should you want to try any. For the sake of comparison with the McFadden pasty, I tried the premium steak version. I enjoyed it but McFadden’s is still my number one, I found the Philps’s pastry slightly too salty for my taste.

SSSI 2 was sand dunes, or towans as they are called locally. The path was a little unclear in places but the main thing was to keep the sea on your left.

Towans, possibly Upton Towans

I’m camping tonight. In a field very close to a pub, where I am having dinner (fish and chips and sticky toffee pudding with ice cream). I expect I’ll get tired of fish and chips before too long but I haven’t yet. Homemade tartar sauce with tonight’s chips. Another 10 miles done, 12 tomorrow, unless I take a shortcut due to the weather.

  1. It looks really beautiful. Fantastic scenery. It’s been grey and dull all day here.
    Hope the camping goes well

    1. Thank you, it’s not just Cornish pasties I see a lot if in my future-sticky toffee pudding is one of the staples on dessert menus. It’s been a bit cold for ice cream, and I don’t usually go for the chocolate so STP it is!

  3. Hello from Diana from Sewing! Great that you’ve got going on your walk – enjoying your blog – wish I was there when it’s sunny, glad not to be when it’s cold and wet…. happy walking, a great experience x

  4. Hi Rose, We were away cycling in the New Forest last week with limited WiFi, so I’ve just had a binge read of your adventures so far. I’m really glad you’ve got off to a good start (despite the unhelpful weather), and I agree about the light in St Ives – it’s not surprising that an artists’ colony was set up there! Looking forward to the next instalment…
