Day 100 Rest day 16 Fort William

I do enjoy rest days. Particularly when the weather is not ideal for walking. Like today which is the hottest day of the week. I slept like a log for a good eight and a half hours and again we had a leisurely breakfast.

We are staying at the Muthu Fort William Hotel, having previously stayed at the Muthu Ben Doran Hotel in Tyndrum. The Muthu hotel chain was founded by Dr MG Muthu whose five golden rules to success were Truth, Hard Work, Integrity, Character and Hope according to a notice in the Ben Doran Hotel. There are pictures of him in both hotels but the Muthu Fort William has been fully refurbished with an Asian approach to hotel decor that seems slightly out of place in the Highlands. On the other hand, it is a change from tartan.

Lousewort-apparently it can be used medicinally for a huge number of ailments including rheumatism and general debility. Had I but known, I might have chewed on a bit.

We have been out to assess meal opportunities in Fort William. I have bought a pair of new shoes. A bit risky but worth a shot. I can break them in over the next week as we have baggage transfer to Inverness.

Devil’s bit scabious. If I’d had my wits about me, I’d have mentioned it in the Devil’s Staircase post. Unfortunately, walking day after day, even without a heavy pack, doesn’t seem to sharpen the wits at all.

We had lunch on the green-takeaway sandwiches from a vegetarian cafe- and then I went back to the hotel to rest my feet while Matthew had a walk

I have spent the afternoon reading up about the Great Glen Way which we are following to Inverness, and I might go for a short walk along Loch Linnhe before dinner

A small herd of deer at Inveroran that I also forgot to mention

In the end I didn’t go for a walk before dinner. We made for our preferred restaurant only to find that almost every eating place was identifiable by a large queue outside it. All that is except for one which looked fine, had tables outside (the west of Scotland was the hottest place in the UK today), and did a fairly good haddock and chips. I went for a short walk (it is a rest day after all) down to the water, as the sun was setting behind the hills above Loch Linnhe

  1. Save me some lousewort if you find anymore!!

I like to picture the meeting/discussion where ideas such as the one about the Muthu Hotel in Fort William is first pitched

  2. You’re so lucky to see Fort William in the sunshine. It’s rained every time I’ve been there.
Also is that supposed to be an altar alcove with MG’s picture in?

  3. We stopped for lunch in Fort William en route to the Hebrides a few years ago and struggled to find somewhere decent too!
